International Earth Day: 5 Things for Awakening the Environmentalist inside You in 2018
“We don’t have to sacrifice a strong economy for a healthy environment”
: Dennis Weaver
We are living in a world where even the richest man in the whole Earth doesn’t have access to clean air and pure drinking water. And we, the humans are finding more and more gruesome ways to destroy the environment day-by-day. With a precarious incline on global warming year to year, our planet is already on the verge of becoming a flaming wrecking ball. Well, this does has to stop before our Mother Nature is forced to rain down her wrath upon us. With all those seminars, papers and interactive sections which we’ve been reading and attending since our childhood on ‘the importance of preserving environment’, have we ever tried to make them in to practice?
International Earth Day which is celebrated worldwide on April 22nd, has a motto of promoting or educating the world about the importance of fostering a sustainable healthy environment and protecting the earth from further damage. So, here are some tips to awaken the environmentalist inside you on this International Earth Day 2018.
1. Ditch Your Car
Since April 22nd falls on Sunday this year,
we don’t think to ditch your car for the
day back in the garage would bother much. From the latest environment survey,
the main culprit of 80% of the pollution is from our vehicles. Whether it’s a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler, the number of
impurities they emit while running is enormous.
So, on this International Earth Day keep your vehicle
back in your garage itself. A day off for your car is like a day in heaven for nature. The amount of fuel you’ll save the
amount of fresh air you inhale and much more. Have a picnic in the nearest park
with your friend or family. A picnic
blanket, a picnic
basket, and some peanut butter jelly sandwiches can entertain you
much more than a record-breaker movie in a multiplex.
2. Stay
Organic
The whole point of Earth Day is to be environmentally friendly. Trying to stay
organic as much as you can from this day might be the least amount of justice
you can show to the Mother Nature. Eradicate plastic and non-degradable stuff from your home. Plastic is one amongst
the most pollutants that kill the Earth
and its beings.
Instead of carrying
bags, you can use a tote bag for daily
use. Use good quality waste cans and bio-friendly garbage bags. Keeping your
surroundings clean is the first step you can take towards a clutter-free Earth.
Place liquid and solid waste in separate garbage bins, this will not only help
you to organize your wastes accordingly but also helps the garbage authority of
your locality to treat them accordingly.
3. Volunteer
For an Environmental Group
The best thing you can do on the International Earth
Day is to volunteer for an environmental
group. Search for an environmental group
in your locality and enroll today itself. Most of these groups might be
planning something big on Earth Day so, lend your part in saving the Earth.
Cleaning up local water bodies, planting trees, prepping
local parks and gardens, running campaigns on fighting for air and water,
public seminars on environmental safety are some of the common activities every environmental group come up with on April 22nd. Make sure to conduct a
lemonade party after your activities to spread the love and care. A few fresh
lemons from your kitchen garden and lemonade
glasses with sugar will do the trick.
4. A Vegan
Diet
Does a vegan diet on International
Earth Day save Earth’s future? Absolutely not! But, a vegan diet on
International Earth Day might help you to get into
the vibes of this day. Invite your friends and family for a special Earth Day
meal. Come up with a menu that uses minimalist ingredients and makes sure these are available in your kitchen
garden too.
‘Eat Green and Stay Healthy’. Try including green and
leafy vegetables in the recipe. A
vegetable salad might be apt for this
title. Include cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and
olive in your recipe for better taste. Make sure to use dishwasher safe
dinnerware for the party. Set your dishwasher to low-water dishwashing
mode to safe water. Washing each plate
and saucer will be time-consuming and
results in water loss.
5. Upgrade
Your Light Bulbs
Do you still use those old and yellow ray emitting
incandescent light bulbs? Well, it’s time
to step up to a more energy efficient
light source. LED bulbs can be a potential replacement for your regular bulbs.
The amount of energy being wasted from incandescent bulbs in the form of heat
is more than enough to power up a whole village.
It is a great decision that power governments of
countries like the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and India have already taken actions on phasing out the energy-hogging bulbs and they are
succeeding too. So, change your ugly bulbs to energy
efficient LED bulbs today itself.
Conclusion
You must remember that every day is Earth Day. Don’t restrict
yourself to a mere one day in a year to make a difference and do something for
the Earth. Consider taking care of Mother Nature as a responsibility more than
that of a burden. Well, She does take care of each of us without complaints
right!
